What we thought of it: Cafe Mondegar, or Mondy’s as it is popularly known, is one of the most recognizable landmarks in Colaba. You just can't ignore the wall art when you visit. The famous big lady in the polka-dotted dress is unmistakable. Situated near Regal Cinema, it serves as the perfect afternoon hangout before, after or even as an escape from a boring movie. It is usually filled with college students, tourists and just about anyone who wants to take a trip down memory lane while enjoying a leisurely meal. Most of Mondegar’s menu comprises snacks like burgers and other continental fare, so breakfast is faboulous. Though, beer is the most popular. You can't go to Mondy's and not have beer. A trip to Mondy’s is easy on the pocket and provides a welcome relief to the foodie from the expensive upper class restaurants nearby. Definitely try the Pepper Steak there.
Nostalgia Set on the bustling causeway road Mondy's as its popularly know is one of the most famous beer drinking places personally i love it when retro and classic rock beats jump from the juke box and u can sit there and have chilled draught and a plate of roast chicken slurrp!!!!!!!!my mouth just waters thinking about that food
Cafe Mondegar, better known as Mondys is an institution, or so I've heard. Having been in Bombay for only 4 weeks, a lot of the places I've been to have been influenced by my born-in-and-brought-up-in Bombaywalla friends. It's been pretty good really, having a bunch of knowledgeable gurus you can turn to for the low down on the places you want to visit.
So what's so special about Mondys? Maybe it's the fact that it happens to be right opposite my office. Or the fact that every time I come into work I find people inside drinking and the totally pasted ones sobering up in Barista, foreigners mostly. Or maybe it was on my first day here when I met up with an old friend of mine who'd been here for 2 weeks who said "dude.. Mondys is MY spot". Strong statement coming from a guy like him.
But it happened. My first time in the place and I loved it. The caricatures on the wall are deadly and trust me, enough time spent in the place and you'll recognise people you know on the walls! A great representation of India that, especially the woman with the unbelievably proportioned body whom we always end up sitting opposite to.
The ambience in Mondys is something special. From the staff who are extremely friendly to the vibe in the air thats almost electric. When I think of Mondys I think of Venice Beach in the 70s, soaking some sun and sipping some ice cold lager, because thats where the jukebox takes you. The first jukebox in the city of Bombay (hearsay) is a beautiful work of art that has classic tracks. To be honest I'm really not qualified to talk about the alcohol in Mondys because I've only ever ordered draught beer every time I've been there. Then again if you don't order draught there's something very wrong with you.
The food is pretty good and on that I'd like to think I'm quite the expert. I've had the i'm-hungry-and-gonna eat-anything food, the chilling-with-the-beer food, the sobering-up in the morning food and it's all pretty brilliant.
Recommendation: The draught is a must have. Definitely one of the best beers on tap in the city. They have a good selection of foreign beers as well although the draught is way better and frankly Budweiser isn't beer. The food is quite good and breakfast is heavenly. Definitely try the Kheema Gotala which is minced lamb cooked with egg and served with pav. The Mondy's special breakfast is pretty good as well and along with their selection of ham and bacon with eggs, all you need is a cowgirl to complete the picture. There's a selection of juices for you faint hearted teetotalers as well, which is quite good.
Mondys is a brilliant place for dinner and lunch because their menu is so extensive. They serve continental food which is fairly reasonably priced and definitely value for money. The Pepper Steak comes very highly recommended but really, anything on the menu is good. Garlic Bread and a pitcher of draught is a stunning combo that's worth a try.
More than anything, Mondys is such an adaptable place. Whether youre with a girl, or with your best friend, or with 10 other people, I always feel perfectly comfortable. And that I've learnt is the most difficult service for any place to provide.
