Monsoon Mates!
Author: Neetha Thomas
Most of the time we get to hear people grumbling that due to the monsoons their morning walks or jogs gets disrupted and some how they can’t go to the gym! Its not only them but I have generally heard that people love to do things at home during monsoons. So let’s get them introduced to Yoga & Reiki!

Yoga is the toast of the season especially Power Yoga! You have Kareena Kapoor & Shilpa Shetty endorsing the same. And of course no wonder they look so stunning and people are flocking around to institutes to learn this ancient technique. So are the people from the west. In most of the ashrams we have 90% of the foreigners coming in for the yoga sessions.

The Sanskrit word ‘yoga’ has many meanings, and is derived from the Sanskrit root yuj, meaning "to control", "to yoke" or "to unite". Translations include "joining", "uniting", "union", "conjunction", and "means".The goal of yoga may range from improving health to achieving Moksha. Currently it is to achieve a healthy living lifestyle and stay fit physically and mentally.

There are many styles of Yoga and we need to know what suits us the best. Hatha is a very general term that can encompass many of the physical types of yoga. If a class is described as Hatha style, it is probably going to be slow-paced and gentle and provide a good introduction to the basic yoga poses. Vinyasa , which means breath-synchronized movement, tends to be a more vigorous style based on the performance of a series of poses called Sun Salutations, in which movement is matched to the breath. Ashtanga , which means "eight limbs" in Sanskrit, is a fast-paced, intense style of yoga. A set series of poses is performed, always in the same order. Ashtanga practice is very physically demanding because of the constant movement from one pose to the next. In yoga terminology, this movement is called flow. Ashtanga is also the inspiration for what is often called Power Yoga. Based on the teachings of the yogi B.K.S Iyengar, the Iyengar style of practice is most concerned with bodily alignment. The emphasis in Kundalini is on the breath in conjunction with physical movement, with the purpose of freeing energy in the lower body and allowing it to move upwards. All asana practices make use of controlling the breath. Pioneered by Bikram Choudhury, this style is more generally referred to as Hot Yoga. It is practiced in a 95 to 100 degree room, which allows for a loosening of tight muscles and profuse sweating, which is thought to be cleansing. There are many more of them like Sivananda, Forrest, Jivamukti, Anusara and Kripalu.

Another energy healing method which is fast catching up our Page 3 society is Reiki . Reiki is an ancient method of self-mastery (or self-growth, if you prefer) and healing using the chakras (energy centre’s) along with several energy/power symbols. The words "Reiki Shiki Ryoho” (pronounced: Ray-key Shi-key Ro-ho) mean: ‘Reiki’ {Universal Life Energy}
‘Shiki’ {System}
‘Ryoho’ {Method of Healing}

Reiki Shiki Ryoho is a set of five principles for living (precepts), has three levels to learn (some others you may encounter use more), a set of hand positions for treating yourself and others, and the receiving of an Attunement to connect to the Reiki energy. An Attunement is a simple ceremony that helps you to reconnect to the energy that IS Reiki performed by a Reiki teacher or "Master".

霊 Rei – pronounced as “Ray” Meaning: - Ghost, Spirit, Memorial Service, Tama/ Universal
気 Ki – pronounced as “Key” Meaning:- Vapour rising from cooking/ Life Force Energy

BENEFITS OF REIKI

There are many benefits to learning and practicing Reiki. At its most simple level, Reiki is an effective way to bring mind, body and spirit into unison. Reiki helps to increase the body's ability to heal itself. It seems to bring about a balance in the body's organs and re-establish harmony in the system. Reiki helps balance the energy in the body, and loosens up blocked energy. It can enhance all other forms of healing and can relieve pain. Reiki can also help to relieve ailments such as headaches, stress, anxiety, fear, colds & flu, et al. People receiving Reiki usually perceive it to be a warm, relaxing, and pleasant experience.

One can learn reiki at Ruah – Breath of Life, Mumbai.
